About Route 66
Historic Route 66, created in 1926, is a 2,448 mile journey to the heart of America. Contrasted with the other highways of its day, Route 66 did not follow a traditionally linear course. Its diagonal path linked hundreds of rural communities across eight states and became the principal east-west artery. Like the country that the road traversed, history was made and imprints were left by the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, the war years, and the road trips of the fifties and sixties.
Route 66 is forever immortalized in America’s consciousness. In the Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck’s epic odyssey of the Great Depression, Steinbeck proclaimed U.S. Highway 66 the ”mother Road.” Then Route 66 experienced the single greatest wartime manpower mobilization in the history of the nation, followed by a new generation of postwar motorists packing up the family for summer vacations. It was during this period that the television series, ‘’Route 66’’, drove into the living rooms of America every Friday and brought the Route to life.
By 1984 Interstate 40 was complete and the small communities along Route 66 were bypassed. Thanks to the efforts of the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona, today the lure of rediscovering the bones of America has put Route 66 back on the map.
The Route 66 Association
Route 66 may have been created simply as the first cross-continental highway, but today it remains a lasting part of American history thanks to the passion of its people who wouldn’t allow the bypassing of the Highway to bypass the heart and soul of America. The association formed in 1987. The Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona has been a tireless champion of the Route. Led by Angel Delgadillo, a barber who grew up on Route 66 and understood the worldwide importance of this two-lane asphalt highway, Route 66 is back on the map.
Working tirelessly, this non-profit, all-volunteer, Association has never lost sight of its mission to preserve, protect, and promote the Route. Over the years, the Association’s efforts have resulted in Arizona’s segment of Route 66 being designated as an Arizona Historic Road a National Scenic Byway, and attaining All-American Road status, the highest National designation possible. In addition, the Association continues to assist all of the Arizona’s Route 66 communities with preservation and marketing projects.
For more Route 66 info contact the Association at 928-753-5001, visit their website azrt66.com, or when you’re in Kingman, stop into the Association’s gift shop in the historic Powerhouse right on Route 66.
Arizona Route 66 Museum
The Route 66 Museum is truly unique in that it is a museum of history, housed in a historical building that lighted the way for the earliest Route 66 travelers.
Opened May 2001 and operated by the Mohave Pioneers Historical Society, the Arizona Route 66 Museum is located in Kingman’s Historic Powerhouse and depicts the historical evolution of travel along the 35th parallel that became Route 66.
